[Norway-PhD] position in Nanoscale Control of Mineral Deposition within Polysaccharide Gel Networks - NTNU

The Department of Physics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) announces a vacant PhD or Post doctor fellowships in the field of bionanotechnology.

The project entitled “Nanoscale Control of Mineral Deposition within Polysaccharide Gel Networks” is financed by Norwegian Research Council. Both, candidates for the PhD position (holding a Master degree) or for the Post doctor position (holding a PhD degree) will be considered in the employment process and the successful candidate will be chosen based on the qualification.

Controlled deposition of minerals within polysaccharide gels offers a new route to improve properties of gel based materials as well as to make new composites. By deposition of the mineral component within soft and compliant gel matrix, we will create new composite materials with controlled mechanical properties, stability and biocampatibility. Currently, gels-based systems are investigated for their applications in tissue engineering and cell transplantation. The project will focus on achieving a high degree of control of the deposition process in respect to mineral polymorph, particle size and distribution of mineral within the gel. Influence of those factors on the properties of new composites will be studied. Proposed approach is inspired by the degree of control achieved by nature in making composite materials through biomineralisation. Research will be conducted in collaboration with Department of Biotechnology and Department of Chemical Engineering at NTNU and Department of Chemistry, University of Bristol, UK.

We seek highly motivated individuals holding degrees in physics, material science, biotechnology or chemistry. Education (PhD position) or experience (Post doctor) in the fields of biomaterials, biophysics, and electron microscopy are particularly favourable. The candidate will work in a rich scientific environment and benefit from a strong and multidisciplinary training.

Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Pawel Sikorski (pawel.sikorski@ntnu.no, phone: +47 73598393) for further information.

The start salary for the PhD fellowship is set at Norwegian state salary NOK 325,600 per year code 1017, level 43 according to the government pay-scale for university employees. Two percent of the salary will be deducted at source as an obligatory premium to the Norwegian State Pension Fund. Position is for a 4-year period, including 25% teaching duties, usually laboratory teaching at the Department of Physics.

The salary for the Post doctor fellowship is set at Norwegian state salary levels 54-77, usually the candidate is paid in level 54, NOK 394,700 per year. Two per cent of the salary will be deducted at source as an obligatory premium to the Norwegian State Pension Fund. The fellowship is for a period of 3 years.

The appointment of the PhD/Post doctor fellow will be made according to national guidelines for universities and university colleges.

The positions adhere to the Norwegian Government’s policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. Persons with immigrant background are encouraged to apply.

Within the application deadline, applicants should submit the application, CV, publication list, certified copies of certificates of education and other relevant documents, names and contact details of two referees.

Please send applications electronically by using the website www.jobbnorge.no. The application should be marked with the reference number NT-16/08.

Other publications should be marked with the reference number and sent in 3 copies to Faculty of natural sciences and technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, 7491 Trondheim, Norway. These documents will only be returned on inquiry.

Application deadline: 04.04.2008.
